and off topic!
I just discovered its legal for me to carry a loaded pistol (the one I inherited is similar - S&W .357 mag 6 inch barrel) in my car without a permit. Interdasting. I wouldn't because my wife doesn't even allow the gun to be stored at my house...but I could and i might if I'm camping in bear country and I can get a locking safe for the car.

Awesome. Just make sure you don't go too far with it, hate to forget it's in there then show up at the border or something.

I would hope your car has loaded pistons!
What state is that legal in? Is there a real possibility of wildlife being a danger if you get stranded?

You must have such a small penis OMG I bet you're a mouth-breathing redneck that drives a truck because of your small penis lolololol.
*This has been a test of the Gawker Commenting System. If this were actually Gawker, you would be inundated with accusations of having a small penis/brain and would be told to "kill yourself". This is just a test.

Remember tho check the law by state. Story recently out of NJ that a woman had a legal gun on her from PA, went to NJ with it got stopped for some reason and can face somewhere between 3-6 years in prison.
Just a friendly tip, kick ass gun!

I'm not even sure what the laws are outsite my state (Utah) but its nice to know its an option. My dad bought this gun to hotload .357 mag rounds for self protection in bear country specifically. I typically subscribe to the idea that bear defense effectiveness is ordered as followed:
1. Don't surprise a bear, make lots of noise
2. Bear spray
3. A very potent, long barrel handgun
I wouldn't even carry it with me hiking but it would give me peace of mind if a bear came snooping around my camp at night and was stirred up to anger by me surprising him, or him being very hungry and being intent on my food. Bear spray is effective on a non determined bear, but only killing a bear will stop a determined one. With my family's safety on the line, its a nice failsafe.

If you are worried about bears the 357 isn't a great option. A 12 gauge shotgun loaded with slugs or buckshot is far more effective (and cheaper!). A .338 Win Mag is another excellent choice but is far more unwieldy. Don't get me wrong I love a good 357 but it doesn't pack the pentration or ooomph to stop a raging bear.

Great handguns! I got a S&W 357 with the 8-3/8" barrel, thing is accurate out at 100 yards.

Most of the types that live and work in bear country recommend a hotloaded .357 mag long barrel for the fact that it does pack the right amount of punch but is still fieldable. a 180-200 grain .357 mag round packs as much of a punch as just about anything you can carry. Besides, I can't leave a shotgun loaded in my car.

Same here in NM your car is considered an extension of your home. I never have one in the car but its nice to know that we can.

I am not saying don't do it. I actually grew up in bear country myself (mind you we didn't have polar bears or grizzlies) just black bears, and they are big chickens.
Every once in a while you hear about someone getting mauled pretty good out there, but for me (no family) I don't need a gun to take on a bear. If I lived near grizzlies it'd be a different story.

I want to take the family to Glacier and last time we were there they closed the sites next to ours because of bear activity and actually shot and killed it because it was snooping around the sites and it wasn't responding to the usual intimidation and relocation methods. It helps me sleep better.

The longer barrel makes a huge difference. I'd be antsy about a 3" barrel though, hotload or not.

And my friend just got a Kar98k carbine BB gun. It was nice, but it needs some greasing up.

mine is (I think) a 6, but it could be the 8. He bought it for the purpose of bear defense.

Yeah occasionally they do need to be shot. Doze it!
I want a gun, but have to go without for now, it's not really a necessity in the city (what's going to come at me...a marmot? hahaha).

Fortunately its a foreign truck, so thats something I guess.

Utah, yes...but less so than states I would travel too (Wyoming and Montana). Its not being stranded, its that I like being in the backcountry with my family.

I haven't shot this gun much, we were supposed to go shooting with the scouts two weeks ago and then last week but it keeps getting rained out. This is will be the first time I will shoot it as my gun.

My dad had a few and the family got them when he died, I got this and a rugger .22 piston. I always like his 1911 9mm best though. its pretty tough to justify not owning a gun as a direct Browning descendant.

open carry up here in maine, though I never do

I can open carry here as well, but I think it has to be unloaded with a single action, or at least the round cant be chambered (for a revolver)

I like to be prepared. (But not to hoover, apparently.)

sir do you have any weapons to disclose to me at this time?
well.....

Heh, the police tend not to bother asking here, though I like to imagine they'd at least crack a smile if they did! (Also, it's perfectly acceptable to get out of your car after a traffic stop, though I'm not sure how they'd react if I got out and nerfed the guy with the ticket book...)

My uncle buys guns as a hobby because he's retired with a lot of money and has nothing better to do. A few months ago he bought a S&W 500, so we took it out for a test shoot.
I've shot a fair amount of guns in my day and nothing has hurt my palm like that thing. It was like the Hulk was punching me in the palm.
Here's a slo-mo shot I took with the potato. Don't know why it's so grainy, the phone takes video in 1080p....
![]() 08/06/2014 at 14:53 |

Yeah all the research I did on muzzle energy and bullet force had the S&W 500 right at the top. Thing must be hell to shoot.

It was a bear (a little pun intended). Seriously though, if I was facing the possibility of encountering a hostile bear, this thing would be at the top of my list.

If you are looking particularly for a handgun, another one you could look into is the Glock 20 or 29. They are chambered in the 10mm Auto round which has similar (and in a lot of cases better) ballistic properties to the .357, but can be chambered in auto loading handguns. As a result, instead of 6 rounds, you get 15+1! However, I've shot these things and their recoil can be pretty sharp and snappy.
BTW, The stock barrel in the Glock 20 is 4.6 inches, but its a glock so there are plenty of aftermarket options out there.
